What about IDC's illegal cash?

To the editor:

Constituents of Sen. Jeffrey Klein, who is running in a hotly contested Democratic Party primary on Sept. 13, deserve some answers.

Why did Klein, a member of the Democratic Party, chair a supposedly independent committee of the Independence Party for close to two years? Was it so he could accept $200,000 in political contributions from his apparently false entity, and other members of the allegedly former Independent Democratic Conference could accept similarly large contributions, in apparent violation of the state’s campaign finance laws?

A state supreme court justice ruled last month that this fundraising arrangement violated state election law.

In a July 20 letter, state elections board counsel Risa Sugarman alleged that the falsely designated committee was “really just an extension of the IDC campaign committee for the period of Aug. 1, 2016 to April 23, 2018, (and) was used to illegally raise and spend funds in support of IDC candidates, and thereby evaded contribution limits.”

Ms. Sugarman gave Klein and his cronies 20 days to return more than $1.4 million in contributions.

Fortunately, the voters of Senate District 34 have a clear choice on Sept. 13: Alessandra Biaggi. She is a true Democrat, committed to fair elections, and supporting fully funded public schools, universal health care, and affordable housing for all New Yorkers.
