There aren't many people from the Bronx on the U.S. Supreme Court. In fact, there's only one. And she's coming to Manhattan College.

Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor is slated to speak at the May 17 undergraduate commencement ceremony for Manhattan College May 17, where she'll also accept an honorary degree.

The daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants, Sotomayor attended Cardinal Spellman High School in Edenwald. She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1976. In 1979, she earned her law degree from Yale, where she also served as editor of the Yale Law Journal.

Sotomayor worked as an assistant district attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s office between 1979 and 1984. Afterward, she joined the private international commerce law firm Pavia & Harcort, where she was first an associate and then partner until 1992.

President George H.W. Bush nominated Sotomayor to the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York in 1992, and was later appointed appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1998, where she served until President Barack Obama nominated her for the Supreme Court in 2009.

This year's Manhattan College commencement will begin at 11:30 a.m., at Draddy Gym. A reception will follow at 2 p.m.
