Sorry, but I'm not going to quit

The letter written by one of your readers completely misrepresents the tenor of his conversation with my staff about his school-hardening proposals.

Mr. Steve Reich, who (as far as I know), does not work for the city’s education department or the New York Police Department — nor does he operate a school security consulting firm — seems to think schools should be on permanent lockdown, a philosophy frequently espoused by conservatives who would rather turn our schools into jails than actually confront the epidemic of gun violence in our country.

I agree that school safety is incredibly important. I think we should let school security experts be the ones who make decisions about school security, and we should let office managers make decisions about office personnel.

I stand by my staff and reject Mr. Reich’s politically motivated attack on my staff’s character.
