Posted

Stanley Isadore Mast died Feb. 14, 2019. He was 87.

Devoted husband to Aimee, father to James and father-in-law to Jessie, doting grandfather to Caleb and Anabela, he was born in the Bronx on March 12, 1931. He moved at an early age to Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach where he was raised during his formative years.

He graduated in 1953 from City College as the colonel of the Corps of Cadets in CCNY ROTC. He then went on to serve in Korea after the armistice, specializing in demolition.

While working for HTNB Corp., as a civil engineer, he met Aimee, and discovered that both of their families had emigrated from Bialystok. The couple married in 1959 and went on to adopt their son James. They lived in Riverdale for more than 60 years.

He served a long career in civil engineering, working at HNTB for 35 years, and later at Dewberry Davis.

He led teams on a wide variety of projects across the country, including airports, bridges, and large-scale public works projects.

He was a longtime president of his co-op board, as well as president of the Riverdale Mental Health Association.

After the passing of Aimee in 2007, he split his time between the east and west coasts to spend time with his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren in Portland, Oregon. He eventually moved to Portland full-time when his health was in decline.

He was fiercely independent throughout his life, and remained so until his very last days. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and those that entered his life.

Gifts in memory of Stanley Mast can be directed to Mosaic Mental Health (formerly known as Riverdale Mental Health) at MosaicMH.org, or to the Kingsbridge-Riverdale-Marble Hill Food and Hunger Project, P.O. Box 251, Riverdale Station, Bronx, N.Y., 10471.
