Press welcomes spring intern

Posted

Aaron Mayorga, a name some readers might recognize as an occasional photographer for the paper, joins The Riverdale Press as a spring intern.

Born and raised in the Bronx, Mayorga is in his final semester at Manhattan College, where he’s pursuing his bachelor’s degree in communication and government.

As an undergrad, he got his start in print media shooting photos for The Quadrangle, Manhattan’s student newspaper. Shortly thereafter, he was named the student weekly’s photo editor, managing the paper’s small, yet effective, photography staff.

A graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School in the South Bronx, Mayorga is no stranger to The Press, having initially worked as a freelance photographer last April.

After finishing a summer studying at the University of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia, Mayorga spent the past semester working with the Norwood News, a free bi-weekly community paper. There he reported on the growing problem of homelessness in the northwest Bronx, and covered the controversial rezoning of Jerome Avenue.

Diaz wants NYCHA boilers replaced

Bronx borough president Ruben Diaz Jr., is demanding the New York City Housing Authority issue an immediate emergency declaration to get defective boilers replaced in their developments.

The call for an emergency declaration comes in the wake of the recent severe cold that struck the city earlier this month, according to a release, during which mobile boilers across the five boroughs stopped working.
