People above the politics

To the editor:

I’ve been catching up on back issues of The Riverdale Press, and can’t help but notice your all but endorsement of Alessandra Biaggi, the far-left candidate for the 34th Senate District.

I am deeply concerned that Alessandra Biaggi is supported by persons and groups detrimental to the existence of Israel.

As you reported recently, Biaggi has been endorsed by the democratic socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who referred to Israel as an occupier. Some of the groups behind Biaggi call for imposing economic sanctions in Israel.

On the other hand, Sen. Jeffrey Klein has demonstrated abiding support for one of our strongest allies, Israel.

Sen. Klein represents the interests of our community, our state and our nation. He is a skillful leader whose ability to build bridges curtailed dysfunction in Albany and enabled the passage of progressive legislation in a Republican-controlled chamber.

He shepherded the passage of the SAFE Act, which stops criminals and the dangerously mentally ill from buying a gun requiring universal background checks.

That bill also increases penalties for people who use illegal guns, and imposes the toughest assault weapons ban in the country.

Sen. Klein is a staunch supporter of women and families. His legislation doubled the tax credit for working mothers, enacted gender pay equality, and created an outstanding program of paid family leave.

He has funded outreach programs for young Latina women, as well as fitness and wellness programs.

Sen. Klein puts people above politics.
