Kingsbridge Heights man dies soon after being handcuffed

Police are investigating the death of a Kingsbridge Heights man after officers found him with a handgun magazine.

Officers were called to 2767 Reservoir Ave., just before 5 p.m., at the edge of the 50th Precinct for what was described as an "emotionally disturbed person," according to the New York Police Department.

A 71-year-old man answered the door for police, telling them that his 48-year-old son was inside his bedroom, refusing to come out. When the officers approached the door, the man reportedly opened it, revealing a gun magazine on his floor.

The man — who police later identified as Dwayne Pritchett — was handcuffed, but he still tried to pull a pistol from one of the cop's holsters. Officers were able to get Pritchett under control, according to the report, and got him out of the room.

No sooner was he out of the room, but Pritchett collapsed unconscious, prompting emergency services workers — already on the scene — to help him. 

Pritchett was taken to New York Presbyterian-The Allen Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

The medical examiner has been tasked with determining a cause of death.
