Grad honorees at The Mount

Posted

Not only did College of Mount Saint Vincent graduates receive their diplomas at the school’s 106th commencement recently, but two students earned the Margaret Patterson McKee Service Award.

Andrew Curiel and Jonathan Ramirez picked up the award, named after the mother of former mayor Joseph McKee. Margaret was an active volunteer on the college’s campus and within her community — much like Curiel and Ramirez.

Curiel traveled to Paterson, New Jersey, to build homes for Habitat for Humanity.

Ramirez was part of a group of students who stayed at Bethlehem Farm in Appalachia for a week rehabilitating a home through roofing, painting and carpentry.

School supplies sought for needy

It’s that time of year again when U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel collects school supplies for students who need them most.

There are more than 14,000 students in the Bronx who could use a little extra help in the form of supplies at schools, according to the city’s independent budget office, and Engel is working with the Coalition for the Homeless for “Project: Back to School.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation throughout August can do so at Engel’s office, 3655 Johnson Ave., weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
