LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Enough is enough, Trump fans

To the editor:

We all know Donald Trump’s art of the deal, which may finally be catching up with him. On April 4, the former president was indicted and pleaded not guilty to 34 felony charges for a series of hush money payments allegedly made on his behalf.

Business deals aside, Trump is, in my eyes, guilty of much more. Climate disasters. Hate. Acting to destroy our democracy. Death by Covid-19.

Indeed, the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis issued a not-so-surprising report highlighting Trump’s “failed stewardship over the pandemic response and persistent pattern of political interference.” In the United States, hundreds of thousands died as a result.

Yes, as president, Trump ignored the science of Covid-19, instead putting forth wishful thinking. Remember: While horrific television images showed hazmat-clad workers placing bodies in refrigerated trucks, Trump said he’d like to see the country “back to work” by Easter Sunday 2020. Asked if that date had medical significance, he replied, “I just thought it was a beautiful time.”

Don’t forget that from the beginning, Trump pooh-poohed Covid’s severity, ignoring Dr. Anothony Fauci’s warnings. After vaccines were developed, a staggering number of Trump followers refused to be vaccinated. Better to take a slug or two of Clorox? Wasn’t that enough? Nope.

Why not host a party in the Rose Garden (no masks required) to announce his nomination of a new U.S. Supreme Court justice, an event that turned into a Covid super-spreader?

Soon after, Trump himself tested positive for Covid. Hah!

You’d think his blindness to the gravity of Covid-19 might have been reason for even Trump’s staunchest believers to say “enough,” and dump Trump. Hearing the latest dismal or laughable news concerning Trump, I always said, “Enough!”

A reminder, whatever the climate change catastrophe du jour: Trump pulled out of the 2015 Paris climate accords, even though the United States was among the giants emitting the greenhouse gases killing our planet. In fact, deadly catastrophic disasters worldwide triggered by climate change—flooding, interminable heat waves, wildfires — escalated during the Trump White House years.

Enough!

Wasn’t it bad enough for Trump to say there were “fine people on both sides” of the fatal violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. Then on Jan. 6, 2021, to profess his love for the insurrectionists at the U.S. Capitol?

Enough? Nope! Wait, much more was to come, including taking classified documents from the White House and declassifying them “using his mind.” Huh?

In November, several Trump-endorsed candidates lost the midterm elections. Did some Trump loyalists finally see the light? Had they said, “Enough”? Yet, Trump announced his run for the presidency in 2024 — and continued to show how unfit he is for that job.

He invited to dinner a Black antisemitic rapper who brought along an uninvited rabid white supremacist. Just days later, Trump expressed wanting to “terminate” the Constitution so he could declare himself president.

Yoo-hoo! Did you miss his call for “death and destruction” should he be indicted?   Thankfully, the paltry number of supporters outside the courthouse where Trump was arraigned caused neither death nor destruction.

Dare I? Yes. I insist that Trump fans not forget the fallout of his dangerous actions on Covid deaths, climate catastrophe, hate, and threats to democracy. Take off your MAGA caps, and say, “Enough!”
