Engel upset over Kavanaugh vote

There were a lot of unhappy lawmakers on the Democratic side of the aisle in Congress this past weekend following the successful confirmation of new U.S. Supreme Court justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Following the U.S. Senate confirmation, U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel issued a statement declaring he was “deeply disappointed” in the vote that installed “a man with so many red flags to our highest court.”

“Brett Kavanaugh holds some dangerously conservative views, and the terrible damage he will do to women’s rights, workers’ rights and civil rights as a Supreme Court justice cannot be understated,” Engel said. “But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the problems surrounding his appointment. Judge Kavanaugh has also proven, beyond any doubt, that he is ill-tempered, highly partisan, and wholly unqualified to offer any objective judgements on the Supreme Court.”

Kavanaugh’s ultimate confirmation was controversial, especially after Christine Blasey Ford and others came forward to claim sexual misconduct by the former circuit judge and former White House secretary under George W. Bush.

Kavanaugh edged his way into the Supreme Court after a 50-48 vote, mostly along party lines.

Engel not only declared Ford’s testimony in front of the senate to be “credible,” but he also claimed Kavanaugh “repeatedly lied under oath.”

“Any one of these issues should have been more than enough to derail his confirmation,” Engel said. “But the Senate GOP was undeterred, even in the face of overwhelming backlash from the American people.”

Kavanaugh became the second Supreme Court appointment for Trump, following the installation of Neil Gorsuch last year.

The current seat opened following the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy.
