DM job is important

The continuing lack of a district manager for Community Board 8 does have negative effects, regardless of the nonchalance with which the board’s selection committee views its efforts.

The street paving of Fieldston Road between West 250th and 253rd streets is in deplorable condition — pothole filled — but never repaved in the more than 47 years that we have been in residence on the block. In answer to the complaint, the city’s transportation department — the agency responsible for maintaining the condition of the street — has advised residents in the 19 homes on the block that the street is not a city street in the belief that it is part of the Fieldston Historic District, into which it continues.

It would be the responsibility of the community board to advise the city department otherwise, and the former district manager, Michael Heller — after viewing the condition of the road and recognizing that it was a city street — was preparing to do so at the time of his departure.

A new district manager could take up the cudgels again, were there a district manager.

So the delaying procedure of the search committee does have a negative affect on the CB8 community.

While the necessity of having community boards is often questioned, here is an example where it could have a legitimate reason to exist.
