Ban park feeding ban

Posted

To the editor:

I had to write about an impossible situation going on at this very minute.

The city’s parks department wants to enact in April a new rule that would seriously punish all of us who go to the parks and feed the squirrels and birds healthy food so they can survive. This includes residents, tourists, the elderly, low-income families and immigrants.

The parks department wants to place into law their proposed rule. Police would patrol the parks looking for people who are feeding the squirrels and birds, and will give us a citation as “animal abusers” that would go on your record as breaking this new rule, which would constitute a violation under the penal law that includes heavy fines and jail time.

Everyone must speak out now to ban this proposed new rule, which is seriously destructive to people and park wildlife alike.
