A day at the orchids

Posted

Orchids have taken over the New York Botanical Garden.

In wildly intricate installations, orchids are the tour de force in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.

The garden brought on Daniel Ost, a Belgian floral designer widely heralded as the world’s greatest, to arrange this year’s show, now in its 16th year. Ost trained in ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, which is deeply informed by wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthetic principle of imperfection and asymmetry.

Visitors arrive at the show with their phones and cameras at the ready for orchids that are an explosion of color. Ost’s installations make for dynamic backdrops that, for many visitors, elevate selfies.

The show, which opened March 3, has offered a respite from a brutal winter and an erratic spring. It ends April 22.
